Interview Tips for Hiring Interns - Spark Hire

Interview Tips for Hiring Interns - Spark HireLast week we talked about the importance of taking your in eigener sacheship job postings seriously. It is important to come up with and post a thorough job description, make contact with local colleges, and have a clear idea of the type of compensation you can provide. Once this process is complete, you will (hopefully) have a manageable quantity of applications trickle in which then leads to the vorstellungsgesprch process. Like advertising for interns, bewerbungsinterviewing interns should be taken as seriously as a full-time employee. This is because good summer help can often turn into good full-time helpnot to mention the fact that you dont want to work with a crummy intern all summer. Here are some interview tips for your internship candidates questions to ask, and warning signs to watch out for.First, begin your interview by giving the candidate background on your company and the position. Most interns work as summer help to gain valuable work experience that will open professional doors for them down the road. In order to get top talent, it is important to sell the value of an internship with your company. This is where you will be glad that you formulated such a specific and goal-oriented job description.Second, check out a few lists of great interview questions to ask. Dont be afraid to keep it simple, for the most part. Questions likeWhat are you studying and why?Why did you apply for this internship position? What extracurricular activities are you involved in?Feel free to ask a bit more about an interns college experience, if they are a college student. For interns, college classes and extracurricular activities are the equivalent of job experience. Then feel free to inquire about work habits and other normal professional questionsDescribe a time when you had a difficult work situation that you had to overcome. How do you manage multiple projects at once? These questions will help you determine how the in tern will function as good summer help.In addition to these interview tips, lets talk a bit about red flags to watch out for when interviewing interns. Be wary of interns who areUnenthusiastic interns should be passionate about their field and about the opportunity to work with professionals as summer help.Self-centered interns should think of their internships as learning experiences, not opportunities to show off.Not knowledgeable about your company and the position this shows a lack of interest. These interview tips for intern candidates should help you nab the perfect talent for your company. Upgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job Search

Upgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job SearchUpgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job SearchConsider upgrading your mobile device to a smart phone to demonstrate your tech savvy and continue the job search on the go. Week 3 of New Year, New You.The past two weeks weve worked on upgrading your look and re-engineering your resume to get past the digital gatekeepers. This week I want to focus on a tool you might bedrngnis have considered as part of your job-search arsenal until now your mobile device. With all the advances in technology, we now have the ability to work remotely from almost anywhere in the world. That also means were expected to be more responsive when someone reaches out to us on the phone, via schmelzglas even through a message on a social media site like LinkedIn or Facebook. Owning a phone that allows you to not only communicate via email, but also utilize websites and apps with ease should be a part of every job seekers strategy. Below are five reasons why you should c onsider upgrading your phone to upgrade your search.Dont be dated by your phoneShowing up to an bewerbungsinterview with something other than a smart phone is as bad as mentioning your account on MySpace or using an AOL email address it dates you. While you dont need to be an early adopter (unless your work requires it), you do need to stay far away from any outdated technology that makes you look out of touch. This is even more important if youre facing age discrimination in the job search. Have an interview tomorrow and no time to upgrade your device? Be sure to keep your phone hidden away and remember to silence or turn it off before you reach the employers office building.Respond to recruiters right awayIf a recruiter reaches out to you requesting your resume, you need to be able to respond immediately not when you get home later that night. The ugly truth is that youll be forgotten moments after the recruiter hits the send button. Thats the beauty of owning a smartphone or ta blet you can store a copy of your resume on the device, allowing you to forward your resume on to a recruiter or networking contact at a moments notice. This is especially helpful for those of you who are employed and searching on the sly this way, you can be responsive at the office while avoiding the risk that comes with using company equipment for your search (a big no-no).Theres an app for thatEach day more and more businesses are coming out with apps to support their mobile customers. If you still think of fried calamari when someone talks about their favorite app, youre in trouble. Check out the companys website and apps as part of your interview prep. If youre targeting tech companies, its almost guaranteed theyll ask about your favorite websites and apps, as it helps them figure out if youll be a good cultural fit for the organization. Take a look at your phones app store anddownload a few to test out. My new favorite is HootSuite, which is completely free and helps me man age my Twitter and Facebook feeds. Click on the following link to view some of my favorite apps for managing your career.Maintain a mobile searchIve said it before and Ill say it again searching for a job is a full-time job. Most experts recommend spending anywhere from 20 to 40 hours a week on the job search, depending upon your employment status. And thats just for your job search I know youre all juggling a number of other priorities at the same time. A mobile device can allow you to take what was once consider downtime and turn it into valuable job-search time. Stuck in a long line at the grocery store? Pull out your iPhone and use Ladders free app to identify job matches on-the-go, discover new job opportunities, and scout out the competition.Commuting to the office? Start drafting cover letters or messages for your networking contacts during the train ride.Opt for a budget-friendly optionIs a new device out of your budget? Use sites like eBay to purchase an older version of t he iPhone or Android. You dont need the latest iPhoneto reap the benefits I mentioned above. You can also check out sites like Wirefly, TechBargins, and Everbuying.com for discounted mobile devices and tablets.Consider how a smarter phone could make your job search more efficient and do a little window shopping this week. This is how to make a very memorable introduction

This is how to make a very memorable introductionThis is how to make a very memorable introductionFirst impressions can set the stage for your interaction with a client or coworker - or even a whole conference room of people. You want to come across as memorable, friendly and respected when you offer a few lines about yourself, so how can you nail it every time?According to a Princeton study, people can form judgments about others inunder one second, and thats just based on appearances. At first glance and with the following introduction, you have a short time span to establish how others see you. Here are six ways you can introduce yourself so that people remember you.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more1. Describe yourself and why you matterYou might be tempted to give a canned response when someone asks you about yourself and what you do. Dont fall into the trap of responding qu ickly to get it over with. Rather than stopping after your name, title and location, keep your introduction going with significant details about yourself.Communicate your value to new people, whether youre in a meeting or networking. Go a little further than sharing information that an acquaintance could also rattle off about you. Explain your experience, give a summary of your past accomplishments and present your current goals. In the workplace, this strategy will help people recall your name and face later on.2. Distinguish yourselfWhen you work in a setting where new people drift in and out, you might begin to tune out the basic details of an introduction. And the people you meet operate in the same way. Listening is aunique concentration skillthat falters when information is repetitive and begins to blend together. Set yourself fremdlndisch from other introductions by grabbing peoples attention.Break away from the repetitive or predictable pattern that most people use during a first meeting. Include why youre passionate about your position and what you hope to accomplish through it. If youre meeting with a client, tell them what you aim to do for them and why youre different from the competition.3. Watch your body languageYour body language can impact someones impression of you just as much as your words can. People make judgments based on posture and gestures, and you probably dont pick up on these habits and behaviors in the moment. Strive to maintain eye contact and comfortable but straight posture during an introduction.Fidgeting, crossing your arms and interrupting can be perceived negatively, especially during an introduction. You can be remembered for the wrong reasons in this case. In the workplace,be aware of negative body languageso that you can redirect your actions for a better impression.4. Bridge cultural gapsIf you work with people from multiple backgrounds and cultures, you need to consider how your actions come across. In a diverse settin g, you can prepare to interact with people in a polite and intentional way. Whilethere are no universal manners, you can show kindness and positivity in your interactions.Research international and regional differences so that you dont accidentally offend or miscommunicate during an initial meeting. Cultural gaps arent easy to bridge, so thoroughly prepare before you introduce yourself.5. Practice beforehandSpeaking to yourself in the mirror or to a nearby pet may leave you feeling silly, but you can gain confidence when youve prepared a polished introduction. Repeating the right posture, gestures and verbal introduction can improve your performance. You can effectively make a memorable impression bypracticing in front of an audience, even if its a small one made up of just your friends or family. Preparing your interesting opening lines can reduce nervousness and uncertainty.6. Consult your inner circleIf youre struggling with what intriguing facts you can share with new acquaintanc es, ask those closest to you. Sometimes your coworkers, friends and family can identify your strengths better than you can. Also, ask for honest feedback from your inner circle. Open the floor to hear how you can improve your introduction and make yourself more appealing. You canbenefit from accurate feedbackwhen you implement it at your next meeting.7. Be sincere and follow upEven though practice is helpful, keep your introduction authentic. One quality that people identify quickly on the first impression is trustworthiness, so your sincerity can increase your chances of being remembered.Follow up with the people you meet so that you can lock down your face and name in their memory. This strategy, also known as the mere exposure effect, aims for creating anincreasingly better opinion of youwith more interaction. This article originally appeared on Punched Clocks. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the firs t seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex...

Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex... Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex... Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Extra-Terrestrial Bodies 2018 Arthur L. Williston Medal Winning Paper Abstract By Noah M. Purdy Crewed exploration of space is moving beyond low Earth orbit towards the exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond 1. However, space exploration is expensive, especially deep space missions. Despite dropping launch costs and the introduction of reusable boosters, transporting massive, bulky supplies and equipment to the Moon, Mars, or beyond is a huge obstacle to the future of spaceflight. One way to bridge this obstacle is In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), which makes use of material already at or near the destination to reduce the amount of material and supplies that need to be taken from Earth. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a likely way in which in situ resources will be used. By looking at current academic research and industrial development, this paper explores how additive manufacturing using in situ resources may be the key to unlocking the next stage of human space exploration. In theory, ISRU is simple enough, instead of bringing supplies with you to your destination, use what is already there. But when it comes time to determine the logistics and technical details, it can quickly turn into a complex challenge. Therefore, the simplest ISRU systems should be the first to be employed. These will likely harvest water and fuel by collecting regolith with a rover and heating it to extract the water, which can then be converted to hydrogen, oxygen, and even Methane 2,3. However, for long term exploration, more complex ISRU systems must be developed, to allow for the construction of infrastructure, such as habitats, solar collection, greenhouses, vehicles, and workstations. These structures are made up of many different materials, so for an extra-terrestrial manufacturing system to be practical, it would need to produce components in a wide range of materials for various applications. The best technique that allows for the efficient manufacturing of components fr om a wide range of materials is Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, where components are constructed layer by layer. Of the seven main types of AM, Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Material Extrusion (ME) appear to be the best methods for use on extra-terrestrial bodies 4. PBF consists of a focused energy beam that selectively heats up areas of a thin layer of powered material, to either melt, fuse, or sinter the material together. It can use a very wide range of materials, including plastics, metals, and some ceramics. Precision and surface finish are dependent on layer thickness, energy beam thickness, and energy beam accuracy, but generally very detailed parts can be produced, with respectable material properties and a fine surface finish 5. In extra-terrestrial environments, there are several potential materials that could be used with PBF. One of the simplest is to use the Lunar or Martian regolith itself with no modification 6. For more detailed components, metals such as aluminum and iron could be used, as they could be refined out of the regolith on both the Moon and Mars 7. The second method of AM that has potential is ME, which consists of a gantry mounted nozzle that extrudes material to create each layer. It can function with most materials that are softened when heated, such as thermoplastics, or any fluid material that cures or hardens over time, such as concrete. A potential material for ME manufacturing on Mars is polyethylene, either in the form of high density polyethylene (HDPE) or low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which can be produced from carbon dioxide on the Marian surface using the Sabatier and the modified Fischer-Tropsch reactions 8. Lunar and Martian regolith might also be able to be used directly as a building material for ME, with the addition of a binding agent 9. A potential problem with relying on additive manufacturing for a significant portion of the infrastructure of an extra-terrestrial mission is the long cycle times. Even with the fastest AM techniques, printing a significant quantity of material could take a significant portion of the 12 to 18-month duration of a mission 10. In addition to this, if the infrastructure is intended to be built prior to crew arrival, it must operate independent of humans. However, most current or proposed AM architectures are based around a human user. To truly develop useful AM technology on extra-terrestrial bodies, full automation is necessary to both increase efficiency and to allow the fabrication of components in the absence of humans. There are several companies currently pursuing Earth-bound automated AM systems. Voodoo manufacturing, which operates over 160 off the shelf, ME desktop 3D printers, has recently begun the task of automating some of their processes, with the desire to eventually automate their whole factory 11. They purchased and integrated a robotic arm to reduce human bottlenecks, which increased productivity threefold 12. Another company, Formlabs is working on a similar setup, but taking it a step further. They are creating an automated work cell that consists of five, off the shelf, desktop 3D printers, a robotic gantry manipulator, and a post-processing station, which promises to produce finished parts with no human interaction13. NextgenAM Project, a joint venture between AEROTEC, EOS, and Daimler AG, are taking a slightly different approach. Instead of trying to automate an AM machine designed for human operators, they are working to integrate the automation and AM into one system14. While Vo odoo Manufacturing and Formlabs are focused on ME AM processes, designed to mass produce plastic components, NextgenAM is looking to produce anywhere from single prototypes to medium batches of PBF metal alloy parts. To create an effective AM system on an extra-terrestrial body, both methods should be included, ME for plastics and polymers as well as PBF for metal alloys. Noah M. Purdy The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio In conclusion, in situ resource utilization will play a key role in crewed deep space exploration, and additive manufacturing will likely be the best way to implement it. However, before this can happen, further development is necessary. The first problem is determining how a feedstock for an AM system can be extracted from in situ resources. Potential solutions include using the regolith directly with little or no processing, adding a liquid binder to the regolith, or refining the regolith to extract metals or polymer compounds. The second problem ISRU using AM faces is the difficulty of automation. A system on an extra-terrestrial body will need to be set up and made fully function, independent of a human interaction, and then continue to run for months if not years. ISRU is a key technology that needs developed before mankind extends its reach to extra-terrestrial bodies, and AM will likely play a key role in that development. This author wants to put you to sleep with her writing

This author wants to put you to sleep with her writing This author wants to put you to sleep with her writing For most writers, the idea is a nightmare: Readers drifting off to their prose, lulled by monotonous passages. But for  Phoebe Smith, this phenomenon has turned into an unlikely dream job.The travel writer and journalist has published 15 stories with sleep app Calm after being personally recruited by the company’s co-founder.“I thought, ‘Should I be really offended that he thinks my writing has the effect of boring people to sleep?’ ” Smith told The Guardian.Offensive or not, it’s true that these days Smith’s writing is effectively a substitute for counting sheep. One of her stories, “Blue Gold,” has more than 4 million views on YouTube and has been listened to approximately 15 million times, according to The Guardian. Words such as “slopes,” “lavender,” “meandering” and “sublime” fill the oration, performed softly and distinctly by actor Stephen Fry.“I kind of flip over what we would normally do with writing. We’re normally trying to grab people with a dramatic introduction, and work through a narrative arc with every paragraph we write,” Smith said. “I’m flipping that on its head.”Her style obviously works. Smith said people tell her they really enjoy her stories but can never make it to the end. She’s curing insomnia and sleep problems with her tired travel stories, and she’s even been appointed “world’s first sleep storyteller-in-residence” at Calm.Smith’s writing may be intentionally boring, but her life isn’t. This winter, she’s going on a “sleepy story tour” across the United Kingdom and Ireland. And yes, of course she wants her audience to take a nap during her appearance.“Normally I would be mortified if anyone went to sleep,” Smith said. “This time, I wonder how many people I can get to nod off.”

The Double Standard of Work-Life Balance

The Double Standard of Work-Life Balance The Double Standard of Work-Life Balance Traditionally, men have been thought of as being the protectors and main providers for their families and, therefore, if they spent more time at the office, networking, or even time pursuing an education they were valued for their drive and praised for their successes outside the home. Men are commonly referred to as good providers when their worth is being summed up. Women are more likely to be praised for being good wives and mothers long before they might be referred to en masse as good providers. Men are often expected to be aggressive in business- to be go-getters and are not highly criticized for putting work ahead of family because, in the end, they are serving their families by ensuring their needs are met by a decent income. Women are assumed to be more docile and less effective in business- something statistics show is anything but true. The Price of Success When women strive to achieve success they are often reminded that the price of working or studying late comes at the expense of their spouses, children, and friends, and even at their own personal expense. Have you ever been told you will regret a career now because you are missing out on your childrens young lives? The bottom line is that in most societies around the world, men are given slack that women are not afforded when it comes to defining the roles the should play in life. And when he has it all, it is a noble thing, when she has it all the woman may be questioned about her values and priorities in life. And theres the motherhood penalty to consider.   Gender Differences Men are generally better at asserting and expressing their needs. Biology, nature, and society better prepare boys to enter into adulthood as leaders than is true for girls. Girls are given dolls to play with and may be discouraged from pursuing math and science fields, and certainly, few could argue that women have a tougher time getting ahead in the corporate world than most men do. Being aggressive can be a great quality when it is tempered with maturity; being aggressive in the right ways can help most of us get more out of life- but many women are often timid about asking to have their own needs met. Men may be more likely to take a day off to golf, sleep in, watch sports, or go to the gym than a woman is because when a woman makes a demand, she may be seen as bossy, whiny, or as a selfish mother/wife. The Glass Ceiling Like women, men can also be great nurturers, help-meets, and genuinely supportive of the women in their lives- but men still may not see what their partners want as clearly as women often can. While this may sound like a gross generalization, even men who are highly supportive and helpful may need their female partners to tell them what it is they want and need. It is where the old cliché Men are From Mars and Women are From Venus might apply well. Men and women just think differently about a lot of things, but men will often help- especially when there is a problem to solve if they only know what the problem is. Evidence that supports ongoing stereotypes is clear and rampant in the world of work. Women are paid less than men for performing the same jobs. They are more likely to be turned over for a promotion, and their raises are smaller. Men never hit a glass ceiling- that term was created to define the stumbling block that only holds true for women. Minority women are often stereotyped as being single moms. And, the truth is, that  more single moms are minorities, but this has far more to do with societal and economic limitations that are often based on discrimination and fewer opportunities than being a minority. Unfortunately for any minority- male or female, inequality exists: work harder, get paid less because you are a minority. When it comes to income, minority women dollar-for-dollar make less than the rest of society. So how are women who may need to work more hours than a man to earn enough to provide for their families supposed to be better at balancing their lives? Stereotypes of Biology Women are also subject to being seen as less desirable candidates for vetting and key corporate positions because of the risk that they could get pregnant and drop their careers at any time. Society still values women as wives and mothers first, and towards the end of the woman is list, as economic powerhouses. As a result of this thinking, it is expected that when a child is born women will take time off, or quit their jobs to raise a family. Men are not seen as family conflict risk candidates, and most companies in the United States do not even allow men to take maternity leave to help at home with young children even when they want to. The problem is not simply that women must continue to fight gender inequality- something we have been fighting (probably) since time began. The problem is that the new demands and judgment of women being expected to achieve better work-life balance has only added to our plates. The problem is, work-life balance, when you consider what it was intended to mean, almost sounds like it was invented by a man because it suggests we can have careers, babies, and a clean house if we just prioritize and work harder at balancing our lives. And, if we are good at this, we might even get some time off for good behavior to spend on ourselves.

Education Requirements for a Career in Criminal Justice

Education Requirements for a Career in Criminal Justice Education Requirements for a Career in Criminal Justice If youre considering going to college, then its a safe bet youre also contemplating a career. Getting a post-secondary education is time-consuming and expensive, though.  To make sure you get the best return on your investment, youll want to know just how much college you need for your chosen career, and what degrees you should earn to get a job in criminal justice. Education Requirements and Degrees for Criminal Justice Careers Jobs in criminal justice run the gamut when it comes to education requirements. Depending on the job youre hoping to land, youll find careers that require nothing more than a high school education all the way to jobs in which you need a Ph.D. You may be surprised to find that salary and earning potential is not necessarily commensurate with education level. Criminal Justice Jobs That Only Require a High School Education If youre not ready to go back to school or its just not in the cards right now, you have several career options that require little more than a high school diploma or G.E.D. Those options include security guards, loss prevention specialists, police dispatchers, and corrections officers. There are even still many police departments that do not require college degrees. Starting salary for these jobs can range in the mid $20,000s to $30,000 annually, with opportunities to move up, advance and earn even more. Criminal Justice Jobs That Only Require an Associate's Degree Over the past thirty years, the trend has been for agencies to give preference to job candidates with at least some college. For many law enforcement agencies, you may be required to have an associates degree - or at least the requisite semester hours - in order to get hired. Other careers that may require an associates degree include juvenile justice officers and crime scene investigators. Salaries for these positions average in the low $30,000s annually. Criminal Justice Jobs That Require a Bachelor's Degree Some large and progressive police departments are now requiring their officers to hold a bachelors degree. Forensic scientists need to have at least a bachelors. For aspiring special agents and pretty much any federal law enforcement job, you can be assured that at least a 4-year degree will be a prerequisite.  Probation and community control careers also often require that you hold a bachelors degree. These jobs typically offer starting salaries of $40,000 and up to $70,000, depending on agency, location, and experience. Criminal Justice Jobs That Require a Master's Degree If your aspiration is to become an educator, researcher or advisor, the chances are youll need to earn a masters degree. The types of jobs for which you want to have some graduate work under your belt include criminologists, criminal profilers, and college and university professors. You can also boost your chances of getting hired in a federal law enforcement or special agent job by earning a masters degree. Criminal Justice Jobs That Require a Doctorate or Ph.D. Though a masters degree will make you well-qualified for most any criminology career, to be truly successful - and have real credibility - a Ph.D., MD or other doctorate is a must for some professions. Career paths for which youll want to earn a doctorate include forensic psychologists and some forensic science careers such as forensic anthropologists, odontologists and pathologists. Forging a Path With the Right Degree for a Criminal Justice Career Regardless of where you start, you can take control of where you end up on your career path. Many criminal justice jobs offer opportunities to earn a degree with reduced or no cost. Also, hours associated with shift work can make it easier for you to find the time to go to school, which means you have a wonderful opportunity to not only get a great education but the experience you need to earn the job you really want.

How to Handle Unrealistic Demands From Your Boss - The Muse

How to Handle Unrealistic Demands From Your Boss - The Muse How to Handle Unrealistic Demands From Your Boss Wanting to impress your boss is natural. You work hard, your manager and colleagues notice, and eventually you’ve made your way up the ladder. Pretty clear, right? Well, what happens when your boss isn’t exactly on the same page- or even planet- when it comes to his or her expectations of your performance? It’s a delicate situation. On one hand, it’s never fun to tell your manager you can’t handle your workload- whatever the reason. But on the other, you’re setting yourself up for failure (and a whole lot of stress) if you keep quiet. I’ll be the first to admit that telling a manager he or she has unrealistic expectations isn’t easy, but with a little guidance, it’s totally doable. Before you pull your hair out or give yourself an ulcer, here’s what I suggest: 1. Do an Insecurity Check OK, so before we go any further, you have to make sure what your boss is asking for is in fact, unreasonable. While you may feel a deadline is too tight or a task is beyond your capabilities, your boss might know better. Managers- good ones, anyway- will often push you to stretch beyond your comfort zone to help you develop new skills. After all, knowing how to do everything all the time feels great, but without new challenges, our skills become stale pretty quickly. If your boss is pushing you to do more and you’re feeling overwhelmed, first ask yourself why. Is it because you really can’t do the work? Or is it because it’s something new that you’re not too comfortable with yet? Figuring out where the stress is coming from is a good first step. And if you discover the real reason for your anxiety is simply insecurity or inexperience, give yourself a chance and take your best shot. If however, that isn’t the case, read on. 2. Consult Your Colleagues Even if your workload is something that only you can do, your office mates- especially those with a bit more experience or expertise- may have some great tips. And I’m not talking just about the work. If you’re feeling frustrated with your boss’ expectations, chances are other people have been there, too. Ask around the office, and see if any of your co-workers can provide insight or expertise on handling the workload or handling your boss. For example, if you check in with Bob from accounting, you might learn that your boss tends to lean on employees she can trust. Without that insight, you may have assumed your boss was simply a disconnected taskmaster. And while this information won’t magically lighten your workload, it will guide your strategy on addressing your overflowing plate. 3. Make a List Once you’ve determined your manager isn’t simply helping you along your career path and you’ve chatted with your colleagues, it’s time to figure out exactly why your manager’s requests are unreasonable. Whenever I’m facing a challenge, organizing my thoughts in list format always helps, and this situation is no exception. Write down everything that’s on your plate, especially the demands you think are unreasonable. Then, think through why you’re feeling challenged to get things done. For example, it may seem obvious that the reason you’re stressing about a project is because your boss gave you the assignment on Monday, it’s due on Friday, and you don’t have enough time to get things done. But is that really the issue? Sure, time will always be a consideration, but what’s preventing you from dropping all your other obligations to get this one done? Does your boss even know what else you have on your plate? Make a list of everything you’re working on that will be impacted by the new assignment, including who else is involved and the corresponding deadlines. A detailed list and timeline of what you’re already working on will not only help you see your workload in its entirety, it’ll give you the backup you’ll need for the next step. 4. Talk to Your Boss This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but given our natural motivation to meet or exceed our manager’s expectations, this is by far the hardest step in the process. Fortunately, you have a great list in hand to help walk your boss through the challenges you’re expecting. Here’s how to approach that meeting: Do it Early: The instant you suspect your boss is overestimating your capacity to get the job done, after you’ve completed steps 1 through 3, speak up. Be Confident: Telling your boss you’re anticipating challenges meeting his or her expectations may feel like admission of failure, but it’s not. Approach your conversation with your boss with confidence- but not cockiness- and your boss will see that your concerns are coming from experience, not insecurity. Have a Plan: It’s one thing to voice a concern, but when a deadline is at stake, solutions are what’s really needed. If you know your boss is asking too much, it’s fine to say so- your list will back you up here- but make sure you have some alternatives ready when you do. Maybe it’s extending the deadline on another project or enlisting the help of a few colleagues with more experience. No matter what you do, don’t go to your boss empty-handed. If your manager seems to have lost touch with reality when it comes to his or her expectations, getting a handle on your own first is key. Get to the bottom of what’s really stressing you out about your boss’ demands, and be prepared to have a constructive discussion about why he or she might be expecting a bit too much. If you’re prepared and thoughtful, chances are you’ll exceed expectations anyway. Photo of stressed man courtesy of Shutterstock.

Top Interview Mistakes Millennials Make and Quick Fixes

Top Interview Mistakes Millennials Make and Quick Fixes Top Interview Mistakes Millennials Make and Quick Fixes 6 The era of workplace flexibility presents unique new challenges to job applicants, and Millennials in particular face their own job search hurdles over negative labels and attitudes about their generation. This combination of factors means Millennials must find smarter ways to sell themselves to employers. But in fact, research shows that Millennials are sabotaging their job search by making simple mistakes during the first impression. Let’s take a look at the top five interview mistakes Millennials make (according to the Adecco Staffing Mature Worker Survey) and some simple, five-minute fixes: Millennial Mistake #1: Dressing inappropriately About 75 percent of Millennials lose out on jobs just because they’re not putting on proper interview attire. Unfortunately, first impressions happen in seconds, and not everyone’s going to be on board with your stilettos or yellow dress socks. Quick fix: put on a suit and tie. Create a simple, neutral, conservative suit-and-tie outfit, and make this your go-to attire for every interview. Win the interviewer over with your personality and skills first, and then slowly sneak your favorite eye-catching accessories into your wardrobe once you score the job. Millennial Mistake #2: Posting NSFW social media content Nearly 70 percent of Millennial applicants get passed over for jobs because their social media profiles come across as offensive, negative, or incoherent. Quick fix: clean up your social media profiles. For a quick fix, log into your social media profile through an app like SimpleWash, which can search and find questionable content in seconds for you to review and delete. In the long run, you also need to adapt some best practices for yourself, like restricting privacy for photos and regularly reviewing tags. Millennial Mistake #3: Not asking enough questions Perhaps this is partly why Millennials get labeled as entitled and lazy: 60 percent don’t prepare questions for the interviewer. Quick fix: master strong interview questions. Ultimately, you need to thoroughly research the company you’re interviewing with to demonstrate your knowledge and preparation, but you can memorize generic questions to use in a pinch so you don’t leave the interviewer with crickets and silence. Millennial Mistake #4: Poor writing Roughly 46 percent of Millennials miss out on job opportunities because they lack basic writing skills. Even if a digital infographic-style resume and creative video cover letter landed an interview, at some point Millennials need to be able to write. Colleagues don’t want to interpret text lingo, and companies want new hires to professionally represent them in external emails. Quick fix: plug your writing into apps for instant feedback. Before you send anything, copy and paste your resume, cover letter, and correspondence into writing and editing apps. Some identify passive voice and complex phrases, and others highlight repetitive phrases and score your readability. When you can’t phone a friend, these handy tools instantly bolster your writing (and job candidacy). Millennial Mistake #5: Lacking long-term commitment Even companies hiring flex workers and telecommuters want the employees they invest time and resources into recruiting and training to stick around for a while. About 46 percent of Millennials show they won’t. Quick fix: get excited! Intangible commitment seems harder to demonstrate, but you can actually turn this mistake around in seconds just by changing your attitude. Who seems more committed to a job than a worker showing enthusiasm for the tasks, mission, or company? Preparation, professionalism, and passion go a long way in assuring the interviewer you’re motivated to get the job done and grow with the company. Readers, what interview mistakes are you guilty of? How Employees Volunteering Can Boost Your Business

How Employees’ Volunteering Can Boost Your Business How Employees’ Volunteering Can Boost Your Business Volunteering outside of work is important to many employees, but it isn’t always easy for busy professionals to find the time. There is an obvious downside to your employees being unable to schedule time for volunteering: Philanthropic organizations in your community, and the people and causes they serve, miss out on much-needed extra support. But there is something else you may not have considered: Your workers lose a valuable opportunity to improve their sense of well-being and effectiveness at the office. That’s right. By volunteering outside of work, your employees can perform better at work. A Robert Half survey found that 61 percent of U.S. workers believe that taking part in philanthropic activities outside of the office enhances their wellness - for example, by helping them find better work-life balance. This, in turn, allows them to be more effective while on the job. A helping hand for helping hands Giving your employees time to volunteer can also have a positive impact on your firm’s ability to attract top talent. “Managers may find that encouraging their employees to volunteer is a beneficial recruitment and retention tool,” says Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half. “Many professionals value the chance to give back to causes that are important to them and their community.” Happy workers will be more likely to stay with your organization for the long term. You’ll also likely find many potential hires, particularly from Generation Y and Generation Z, will want to know whether your organization helps employees to give back. In fact, it’s important for employers to note that respondents to our survey who identified with these two demographic groups were more likely to report that they donated their time to volunteer activities. The value the youngest workforce group places on philanthropy echoes findings from Robert Half’s Get Ready for Generation Z report, which showed these employees will accept lower pay to work for a cause they care about. Many of these professionals, and others, want to work for businesses with a good reputation that engage in activities and support causes that are meaningful to them. Doing good works and earning goodwill In addition to providing more flexible scheduling arrangements so that your employees can find time to volunteer, you may want to consider increasing your organization’s direct involvement in the community. It can help you build goodwill for your firm, including among people who may not be familiar with your business. And, of course, it will provide the opportunity for your organization and its workers to do good things for others in need, which is what giving back is all about. Here are three ways to get started: 1. Focus on select local organizations No matter the size of your firm, your business does not have infinite resources. So you’ll want to be selective in terms of the number of organizations you choose to support. Ask your employees for their recommendations, and consider setting up a formal committee to research organizations and find out which ones would benefit most from the donations of time and other resources by your business and its workers. 2. Make it a team effort As they say, there is power in numbers. Encourage all of your employees to take part in at least one of the causes your business elects to support. You can also help to amplify your workers’ efforts for charitable activities outside of work, too, by establishing matching gifts or grant programs. 3. Don't wait for the holidays Don’t wait for a “season reason” for your business to make a positive impact in your local community. There are a wide range of service opportunities available to your firm and your employees throughout the year - from park cleanups to afterschool programs to athletic events for a good cause. Giving back is good, so you and your employees should strive to do so all you can, as often as you can. Your community will thank you. And as our research shows, your workers will be grateful, too. 5 Things You Have to Do When You Lose Your Job - The Muse

5 Things You Have to Do When You Lose Your Job - The Muse 5 Things You Have to Do When You Lose Your Job When I lost my job in 2014, I naturally slipped into a self-pity funk for a bit. What did I do first? I promptly made an enormous bowl of tiramisu and attempted to soothe my bruised ego with dessert. But- as good as it feels to take a well-deserved time-out- the quicker you curtail the wallowing and get back to the grind, the better for your career. After realizing I wasn’t going to find a new job at the bottom of my trifle bowl, I put my spoon in the sink and got right down to business. I found a new job six months later, but was again laid off in 2017 amid a restructuring. This time, I was much better prepared to re-enter the job market. The following is a painful but crucial to-do list anyone who’s been laid off should follow, based on my experience: 1. Acknowledge Your Emotions, Then Move On Immediately after you’ve been let go, you may find yourself experiencing a range of emotions: panic upon saying goodbye to a regular paycheck, exhilaration as you embrace life without a set routine, rage when you reflect on all the long hours you devoted to your former position- the list goes on. Rather than get caught up in each of these, recognize that they’re all normal. But then- and this is the tough love talk everyone needs in this situation- move on and focus on the future. In the case of both my layoffs, multiple colleagues were let go at the same time. Proving the old adage “misery loves company,” we served as our own little support group, commiserating together, motivating each other, and sharing leads. If you find yourself alone and struggling, joining a group or talking to a professional can provide comfort and encouragement and help you reign in those negative emotions. Related: How to Bounce Back After You Lose Your Job (and Feel Like the World’s Ending) 2. Tell Everyone (Yes, Even Strangers) Chances are, your self-esteem has taken a hit, and saying “I’m unemployed” aloud makes it that much more real and devastating. Though you may be tempted to keep your status a secret, friends and family can’t begin to help if they’re not aware. Letting people know you’re available for new opportunities is the first step in getting your job search off the ground. (This email template will make it easier). Right after losing my job in 2014, I attended a friend’s party and upon meeting her pals, I was asked the dreaded, “So, what do you do?” I reluctantly told people about my layoff and waited to be flooded with boatloads of pity. But what I got instead was actually solid support. From headhunter contact information to offers to share my resume with their HR departments, people I’d just met were more than willing to help. I left the party glad I’d spilled the beans, no matter how awkward I’d initially felt. Pro tip: When talking about it, focus on what you want to do next- rather than what happened. For example, “I recently lost my job at [Company] and what I’ve missed most is working with customers. So, in my next job, I’m looking for a customer-facing role at a mid-sized company” sounds a lot better than, “I was laid-off because my CEO doesn’t know how to budget and goodness knows how I’ll pay rent this month. Honestly, at this point, I’d take anything that doesn’t suck.” Related: 4 Questions to Ask Your Network Besides, “Can You Get Me a Job?” 3. Get Your Finances in Check and Create a Budget Talking money is awkward, but knowledge is power. Figure out exactly what you’ve got to work with so you’re not accumulating debt at a time when you can least afford it. The difference between the paycheck you lost and what you receive from severance or unemployment will determine if you need to make some adjustments to your spending- and just how sizable those should be. And this budget worksheet can help you get organized. When I was forced to stop and really look at my finances, I realized I had to make some changes. I started with a bunch of small cuts: dinners in, books borrowed from the library, yoga at home instead of at a nearby studio. Doing this not only made me feel like I was preventing a bad situation from getting worse, it also motivated me to find a new job- fast. Related: A Newly Unemployed Person’s Guide to Severance Pay 4. Invest in Your Personal Development It may seem counterintuitive to spend money at a time when little is coming in, but chalk this up to the old “It takes money to make money.” If enrolling in a class or two will make you more marketable and you can afford it, go for it. I took several writing workshops during my downtime and found that they boosted my self-esteem and offered me a positive outlet. These also gave me a reason to change out of pajamas and practice looking presentable again. If you need help polishing your resume or could benefit from the guidance of a career coach, consider the cost a down payment on your future success. Once you’ve locked down an interview, treat yourself to a new ensemble and reap the benefit of your added confidence. Related: 45 Free Online Classes You Can Take (and Finish) by the End of This Year 5. Prepare Your Narrative You may want to put your layoff behind you, but there’s no denying it’ll come up during a future interview. Come up with an honest but professional narrative and practice it a lot. Each time I mentioned that my previous employer had restructured in interviews, it was met with understanding. From there, I discussed how my skill set would easily transfer and how thrilled I was to have the opportunity to be considered for this new role. Related: Ask an Honest HR Professional: How Do I Explain Getting Let Go During My Search? After the initial shock wore off, I was able to admit that neither of the jobs I’d lost had been an ideal fit. I’d stayed with both of them far longer than I should have because it seemed like the easier option and I needed the benefits. In time, I came to view my layoffs as do-overs- each a new chance to get it right. Once I adopted this mindset, I embarked on my job search energized and with renewed optimism. So, though you may want to retreat for a while and wallow in everything from comfort food to compulsive binge-watching, the best thing you can do is catapult yourself back into the career arena.
